    James Betts left his home at Canterbury, Kent on 4 Oct. 1869 for Sydney, New South Wales. He sailed from London in the ship 'Underlay' arriving in Sydney on 3 Jan. 1870. Betts worked in Sydney for some months before travelling and working in Kempsey and the New England region. He spent some months working with bullock teams transporting logs between Grafton and Glen Innes before returning to Sydney. He departed Sydney on the ship 'Commissionary' on 8 May 1872 arriving in London on 12 Aug. 1872. Pauline Ratcliff is a great granddaughter of James Betts and completed the accompanying transcription of the diary.
