Ronald Winton (1913-2004) was editor and academic in the medical profession. He was editor of the Medical Journal of Australian 1957-1977 and the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Surgery 1967-1977. From 1962 he lectured in the History of Medicine at University of Sydney. Publications include The Future of Professional Freedom (1977), Kanematsu's great gift : the story of the Kanematsu Memorial Institute at Sydney Hospital (1997) and numerous articles in Australian and overseas medical journals. In 1977, he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Australian Medical Association.

The Kanematsu Memorial Institute of Pathology, the first medical institute in New South Wales, was opened in Sydney Hospital in 1933. In 1958 the Institute was reorganised into two sections, Clinical Pathology and Medical Research and in 1982 the New South Wales Government announced the reduction of services at Sydney Hospital. The Clinical Pathology Department of the Institute was reduced and most of the staff members were dispersed to other hospitals. In 1983, the six integrated units which had made up the Research Department were split up, with the Renal and Cardio-Renal Units moving to The Royal North Shore Hospital, Haemorheology to The Rachel Forster Hospital, Immunology to The Royal Newcastle Hospital, and Clinical Haematology, Microcirculation and Histopathology to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

A small Clinical Pathology Department was retained on site and in 1985 the Kanematsu-Gosho Company agreed that the Kanematsu name also be retained by the Department of Clinical Pathology at Sydney Hospital. The Laboratories were renamed the "Kanematsu Laboratories" and are now a Department of Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, physically situated in the Blackburn Building of The University of Sydney.
