  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

As a veterinary science student and a member of the university regiment, Noel George Gash joined the army and served as a gunner in Papua New Guinea at the outbreak of World War II. Returning to Sydney, Noel changed his studies to history, taught at Sydney Technical High for four years, then lectured at Balmain Teachers College.

Noel was seconded to the Australian School of Pacific Administration (ASOPA) in the early 1960s. ASOPA's role was to help reconstruct Papua New Guina after the devastation of World War II. ASOPA trained Australian teachers and patrol officers for service in PNG. Gash enjoyed the opportunities offered for research, travel and teaching.

His publications included articles, mongraphs, and books on the Australian character within the framework of the colonial situation of PNG, and the disposition of the Aborigines.

After PNG achieved independence, Gash began lecturing at Ku-ring-gai College of Advanced Education, until his retirement in 1981. After his retirement, Noel was a foundation member of the University of the Third Age (U3A), set up in the early 1980s to enable senior citizens to undertake tertiary studies without the stress of exams.

Living in Bayview, and later Collaroy, Gash was involved in local issues, such as urban development in the bushfire-prone area, traffic congestion, and community groups.

Noel had 6 children from an early marriage, and his partner of 26 years was Eve Lowndes.
