  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras was born out of the gay protests of the 1970s. The first Mardi Gras was held on 24 June 1978 to mark the ninth anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in New York in 1969. By the 1990s it had become an annual event of national significance with an international reputation. It takes the form of a month-long festival culminating in a street parade followed by a party.
