In 1946, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra was established as a full time entity, with [Sir] Eugene Goossens being appointed as the first permanent conductor. He suggested " ... a musical centre housing a big hall for a symphony orchestra, a small hall for chamber music and a fine home for an opera company ..." be established, which was realised in the opening of the Sydney Opera House in 1973 -- Exhibition caption, 1997
