  • Scope and Content
Diary of a voyage from London to Sydney, 1841, possibly by Helen Dove Birnstingl, nee Levy
Three issues of a ship's newspaper titled Southern Cross, 1854, edited by Jonas Levy
  • General note

A tentative attribution of authorship of the diary is given in donor's letter to the Field Librarian dated 19/11/97. Donor writes that "possibly she was travelling to Sydney to meet her future husband Lewis Birnstingl". Internal evidence seems to suggest the diary was written by a woman. However, the activities of the Birnstingl brothers, Maurice and Lewis, as related in Egon Kunz' book, Blood and gold: Hungarians in Australia, held in ML at 325.24391/1A1, seem to conflict with the view that Levy met her husband in Sydney
