The Association of Relatives and Friends of the Mentally Ill (ARAFMI) was formed following a seminar organised by Mrs Margaret Lukes. Their first meeting was held on 7th March 1975 at the North Sydney office of the N.S.W. Mental Health Association with Mr R. G. Williams as Chairman, Margaret Lukes as the Deputy Chair, and Mrs J. Hough, Secretary.

In 1979 ARAFMI started a 24 hour telephone support line. In 1981 Young ARAFMI was formed, after recognising a need to educate and support younger relatives.

In January 2009 ARAFMI New South Wales was appointed by the N.S.W. Minister for Health as a peak body in representing the families and carers of people living with a mental illness.
