W. Boyd Rayward edited a Festschrift for John Metcalfe titled The variety of librarianship, published in 1976. From 1986 until 1991 he was Head of the University of New South Wales' School of Information, Library and Archives Studies, founded by John Metcalfe in 1960. John Wallace Metcalfe (1901-1982) joined the Public Library of New South Wales in 1923 and in 1932 became Deputy Principal Librarian. Ten years later he was made Principal Librarian. In 1959 he relinquished this position to become Librarian of the University of New South Wales where he developed, and was the first director of, the School of Librarianship. He travelled to Great Britain in 1948 following a Unesco conference in Mexico in 1947. In late 1963 Metcalfe again went to Great Britain on his way to a conference in the United States
