In 1928 Norman Tindale, an anthropologist at the South Australian Museum, began systematically photographing Aboriginal people living on missions and government stations. He photographed Aboriginal people living all over Australia and compiled detailed genealogies of those photographed. In some locations, Tindale recorded genealogies but did not photograph everyone recorded. - Scope and ContentThe New South Wales component of the Tindale genealogies covers nine missions or stations on 153 sheets and includes 375 named portraits. These missions and stations are Boggabilla, Brewarrina, Cummeragunja, Kempsey, Menindee, Pilliga, Walgett, Wallaga Lakes and Woodenbong.
