The Local Government Archives Project (LGAP), a project of the Australian Society of Archivists New South Wales Branch, was set up to provide advice to local government authorities in N.S.W. on the management of records and archives.

The project commenced in August 1991 and was initially funded by a grant from the Heritage Assistance Program of the N.S.W. Department of Planning. Accommodation and other administrative support was provided by the State Library of New South Wales.

In 1992-1993, a professional archivist visited local councils to provide advice on establishing an archives program. During the visits the archivist surveyed and documented the records; identified what could be destroyed and what had to be kept according to the General Records Disposal Schedule; advised on how to store permanent records; assessed the conservation needs of the records and developed a strategy to deal with them. Workshops and seminars were also held in Sydney to assist the councils in metropolitan Sydney. Seminars included an introduction to the legal framework for records and archives management; and workshops on using the General Records Disposal Schedule, and setting up an archive.

The Local Government Archives Project was completed in 1993.
