Mean Streets was a magazine of crime, mystery and detective fiction, with an emphasis on Australian crime writers. Seventeen issues were released between October 1990 and December 1996. Mean Streets was published and edited by Julie Ogden and Stuart Coupe, who also edited three crime anthologies: Hardboiled: Tough, Explicit and Uncompromising Crime Fiction, 1992; Case Reopened, 1993; and Crosstown Traffic, 1993.

In addition to publishing Mean Streets, Coupe and Ogden presented readings by crime writers including Peter Corris, Marele Day, Andrew Vachss and Ed McBain, and promoted Australian reading tours by James Ellroy and Kinky Friedman.

The collection comprises material relating to the publication of seventeen issues of Mean Streets, including correspondence with crime authors; three anthologies: Hardboiled, Case Reopened and Crosstown Traffic; the Australian tours of James Ellroy and Kinky Friedman; the 1996 Ned Kelly Awards, Australia’s first crime fiction awards; and Stuart Coupe’s papers relating to his biographies of Carter Brown (Alan Yates) and Peter Corris.
