  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Daphne Kingston (1928-) artist, illustrator and author of local histories, studies of early buildings and built heritage. She was born in Earlwood, Sydney to parents George Seymour Watt and Frances Mary (nee Griffin).

    In 1950 Daphne was employed as secretary to the accountant of the Snowy Mountains, Hydro-Electric Authority. Daphne married Jeffrey Edgar Kingston at St George Church of England, Hurstville in 1951 and they had a daughter, Janice on 20 March 1959. Daphne travelled extensively throughout Europe during the late 1980s and 1990s finally returning to Penshurst in Sydney.

    Daphne studied at Julian Ashton Art School, Royal Art Society, Watercolour Institute and privately with Brian Blanchard and John Upton over the period from 1969-1976. In 1982 Daphne began teaching art at Penshurst Arts and Crafts, Evening Colleges at Strathfield and Bankstown in Sydney and later in 1984 from her home studio.

    From 1976 until 1999 Daphne produced wrote and illustrated several publications; The Changing Hawkesbury (1979), Early Slab Buildings of the Sydney Region (1985), Sydney's Hidden Charms (1987), Early Colonial Homes of the Sydney Region 1788-1838 (1990), A Hawkesbury sketchbook (1994) and Highways and Byways of the Sydney Region (1999).

    A solo exhibition "Then and Now" was on display at ANZ Exhibition Centre, Martin Place, Sydney (1981 and 1984) and at the Bicentennial Art Gallery, Campbelltown in 1992.
