  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    GEORGE SCOTT McRITCHIE , 1858-4 November 1909, was educated at the Perth Academy and at the Andersonian University, Glasgow, and then in 1873 commenced his apprenticeship in the works of the London and Glasgow Engineering and Iron Shipbuilding Co., at Glasgow. On its completion in 1879 he became chief engineering draughtsman at the works of Messrs. Ramage and Ferguson, of Leith, which post he held until 1884, when he undertook a twelve months’ course as sea-going engineer. From 1885 to 1889 he was in the service of the Queensland Government, as engineer and draughtsman in the construction of dredger plant and small steamers. In 1890 he was appointed chief draughtsman of the Atlas Dock and Engineering Works, Sydney, New South Wales, subsequently becoming assistant manager and manager. This was followed by his appointment as engineer and draughtsman of the Ports and Harbours Department of Melbourne, in which capacity he remained until 1906, when he became manager of the Bridge Road Ironworks, Pyrmont, Sydney. In the following year he transferred his services to the White Bay Steel Works (connected with the Atlas Engineering Company), Balmain, Sydney, where he remained as manager until his death, which took place in Sydney on 3rd November 1909, at the age of fifty-one. He became a Member of this Institution in 1903.
