  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Thomas Sheridan settled with his parents at Stonehenge in South West Queensland, probably in the 1850s or early 1860s. He was about thirteen years old. He worked as a stockman for five years and then returned to England, where relatives arranged for him to study medicine in Paris. After fourteen months study he joined the Army Medical Staff Corp and fought in the war until its end in May 1871. Returning to Queensland in 1872 he worked as an itinerant doctor until he came to Sydney and opened rooms in Park Street. He was convicted of malpractice in March 1885 and sentenced to 15 years in gaol. Released early in October 1892 he went back to his dubious medical practices and caused the death of a young woman in August 1895. For this he was convicted of murder and was executed at Darlinghurst Gaol on 8 January 1896. His memoir was written on 5 January and passed to Father Bernard Carey, a member of the clergy at St Mary's Cathedral.
