John William Crickmore Flower (1839-192-?) was born at Felton in Norfolk, England. In 1854 he left for Australia on board the barque, 'Nene Valley'; before it could reach its destination of Portland Bay, Victoria, the ship was wrecked off Cape Northumberland and four crew members drowned.
Flower spent several years working on properties in the Port Fairy district where his uncle Horace Flower lived. (Another uncle, P.W. Flower was head of the firm Flower Salting & Co.) After visiting his family in England in 1860 he returned to farming in Victoria. In 1867? he married M. Kyle and they later settled in Sydney.
