  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Richard Lewis Jenkins (1815-1883) came to Australia from England in 1841. A physician, pastoralist and politician, he was MLA for Liverpool Plains and Gwydir, 1858-1859, and The Gwydir, 1859-1860. He bought Nepean Towers Estate, near Penrith, N.S.W., where he built a chapel for divine worship, authorised by the Anglican Bishop of Sydney.
    Edward Johnstone Jenkins (1854-1940), physician and pastoralist, was born at Woolamon Station on the Namoi River, N.S.W., the youngest son of Richard Lewis Jenkins. A graduate of Sydney University and Oxford, he held appointments at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London, from 1878 until his return to Sydney in 1883. He became Medical Superintendent at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and was Senior Honorary Physician at Sydney Hospital when he retired in 1914. He married Annie Agnes McCabe at Bowral, N.S.W., in 1887; they had two sons and a daughter, Merle Judith Hamilton.

    Include the papers of Richard Lewis Jenkins, 1874-1881, being mainly License for chapel at Nepean Towers, 26 Sep. 1874, issued by Bishop Frederic Barker, and a copy of Jenkins' will, 1 Dec. 1881; the papers of Edward Johnstone Jenkins, 1874-1932, including an album of newscuttings and photoprints; letters received, testimonials, invitations, newscuttings, ephemera and papers concerning the estate of his father, Richard Lewis Jenkins, 1890; and the papers of Merle Judith Hamilton Jenkins, 1910-1960, being mainly an autograph album including photoprints and drawings
