MacNamara Russell was born in England in 1836 and arrived in Melbourne, Victoria in 1860, where he worked as a surveyor. In New Zealand, 1863-1868, he had the title Road Surveyor and Engineer in the Provincial Engineers Department. He worked in New South Wales, 1868-1873, as Road Superintendant and Engineer for the Commissioner of Roads. He had much to do with the building of an iron bridge at Cowra. In 1869 he married Anita Stephen. Between 1878 and 1881 he wrote a column under the pseudonym Zigzag, for the newspaper Sydney Echo. In 1886 he was in Melboune, elected as a Member of the Stock Echange, and dealt mainly in mining shares. He had a particular interest in a mine at Mt Lyell in Tasmania. In 1888 Russell returned to England where he continued to deal in shares. He died in 1899. Throughout his life he published novels, many autobiographical. - General note
