  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Australian Consolidated Industries Ltd originated in 1872 when pharmacists Alfred Felton and Frederick Sheppard Grimwade founded the Melbourne Glass Bottle Works to manufacture bottles for the pharmacy trade. Branches were established in other states and in 1916 the company was reorganised under the name of the Australian Glass Manufacturers Company. In 1936, following a restructure, the company changed its name to Australian Consolidated Industries Ltd. After World War II it diversified its activities to include the manufacture and marketing of plastic, fiberglass, metal and paper products, building and fibre products, consumer goods, and the production and use of natural resources such as coal and other minerals. In 1982, following a restructure, the company changed its name to Australian Consolidated Industries International Ltd. This new name reflected its geographic spread and scope. In 1988 it was acquired by BTR Nylex and ceased to operate in its existing form.
