Ion Idriess (1889-1979) was born in Waverley, Sydney. After an adventurous life in Northern Australia, the Torres Strait Islands and New Guinea as well as service with the Australian Light Horse in World War I he settled in Sydney in 1930 and took up writing. Over the next forty years he published more than forty books many of them going through several reprints. Among the most successful were Lasseter's Last Ride (1931), The Desert Column (1932), Drums of Mer (1933), Forty Fathoms Deep (1937), Headhunters of the Coral Sea (1940) and The Red Chief (1953).
