James Jones was employed by Lord de Saumarez as a gardener at Saumarez Park, Guernsey between 1872 and 1876. He then came to Sydney and was employed as Overseer of Government Domains until 1913, when he retired. He laid out and planted around government offices, gaols, suburban and country railway stations and courthouses under the control of the Director of Botanic Gardens and Domains. He was involved in the landscaping and laying out of Centennial Park in 1887 and 1888.
