  • General note

    The later inscriptions identify the first figure from the left (dressed in a convict uniform) as "Thompson", who after the granting of his ticket of leave, seems to become a bootmaker
    The fifth panel from left appears to show the shop of Thomas Harbottle, painter, plumber & glazier of Elizabeth Street, Hobart (see General Directory of Hobart Town, 1854)

    Each of the eight pictorial panels comprising the cartoon strip is titled
    A four verse poem is printed beneath the panels
    On backing board are a number of later pencil inscriptions referring to events depicted. These later inscriptions title the cartoon at top centre "An Election Contest 1856". These inscriptions also identify "J.S.H." in the fourth panel from left as John Stephen Hampton
