  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Thomas Valentine Blomfield was a Lieutenant in the 48th (Northhamptonshire) Regiment of Foot when he arrived in Sydney, N.S.W. in 1817. A pioneer settler, he married Christiana Jane Brooks, eldest daughter of Richard Brooks of Denham Court, near Liverpool, N.S.W., in 1820.

One of their sons, John Roe Blomfield (1824-1889), was made a Deacon in the Church of England in 1851 by Bishop Tyrell of Newcastle, N.S.W. He married Mary Rachel Wood in the same year. The couple had two sons, Valentine John Stuart and Harold Arthur. At the time of his ordination to the priesthood in 1852, Blomfield was the incumbent of St. James, Morpeth, where he remained until 1857.

He went on to serve in other parishes, Raymond Terrace, 1857-1866, Burwood, 1866-1868, Mulgoa, 1868-1869, and All Saints' Church, Parramatta, 1869-1886. Mary Rachel Wood Blomfield died in 1870. The Reverend John Roe Blomfield married a second time in 1872 to Marietta Caroline Thorborn, who died in 1875. His third marriage was to Frances Harriett Clarkson in 1876.

Blomfield's great-grandson, Richard Best Blomfield (1919- ) has compiled the family history, An Australian/American Blomfield Genealogy, which he privately printed between 1988 and 1991. He married Laurel Currey (1929-1994) in 1957, and Doris Fischer Westervelt in 1997.
