  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Ray Price was a prominent figure on the Australian jazz scene. In 1948, the Port Jackson Jazz Band, of which Ray was director and guitarist, was one of the few jazz groups performing regularly in Australia.

Ray obtained his A.Mus.A. and L.Mus.A. from the Sydney Conservatorium. He joined the Sydney Symphony Orchestra after 18 months of tuition on the double bass under Charles Gray. In 1956 he was forced by the ABC to choose between jazz performances or the Symphony Orchestra.

Ray also played in a band, the Dixielanders, and a number of other groups, before forming the Ray Price Qintet (no 'u'). The Qintet gave lecture recitals in schools throughout Australia, teaching jazz history by playing it in its various phases.
