  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Lawrence Campbell, M.B.E., studied elocution and dramatic art at the Polytechnic Hall in London and began his career on the English stage in 1888. He left London for health reasons in 1893 to stay with his relatives, Mr. and Mrs. F. Bourne in Davenport, Tasmania. The following year he came to Sydney and began to teach elocution.

Lawrence Campbell advertised himself as a teacher of elocution and an instructor in public speaking, and had rooms in Paling's Building, and later the Equitable Building, on George Street, Sydney. He held a presidency of the Australasian Elocutionary Association, and was involved with the London College of Music. He was also president of the Speech Association. His pupils participated in both local examinations and the elocution portion of the Trinity College of Music exams.

In addition to teaching, Campbell performed a number of recitations and performances, and filled the role of adjudicator at speaking competitions around Australia. During the 47 years during which he taught elocution in New South Wales, he visited most schools and institutions in the State to speak, act, or teach. The Lawrence Campbell Trophy (or Oratory Competition) was begun in 1935, and is a coveted prize for public speaking among the Great Public Schools in New South Wales.

He died at his home in Lindfield at the age of 74.
