George Caley was born in England in 1770. He developed an interest in botany and after working in Kew Gardens he was appointed by Sir Joseph Banks in 1798 to go to New South Wales as a collector. He arrived in Sydney in 1800 and spent the next ten years collecting natural history specimens and exploring. He journeyed as far afield as Van Diemen's Land, Westernport, the Hunter River, Jervis Bay and Norfolk Island. In 1804 he attempted to cross the Blue Mountains getting as far as Mount Bank overlooking the Grose Valley. His appointment was terminated in 1808 and he returned to England in 1810.
