A meeting was held in Sydney in 1937 to start a New South Wales branch of the British Drama League, which had been established in Britain in 1919. Branches had been set up in Canada and New Zealand. The aims of the League were to assist the development of the art of the theatre and to promote the relationship between drama and the life of the community. Evelyn Mary Tildesley (1882-1976) and her sister Beatrice Maude Tildesley (1886-1977) were the driving force behind the New South Wales Division of the Australian Branch of the League. Evelyn was a founder, honorary secretary and a director (1937-1967). Both sisters wrote for journals and newspapers and were heard over the radio giving publicity to the League and promoting drama
