  • General note

    Dated from Joseph Smith II's location at the Royal Exchange, London. (Ref. Directory of British scientific instrrument makers, 1550-1851 / Gloria Clifton, general editor, Gerard L'E Turner (1995). Location : NQ681.7502541/1 General Reference Library)
    Said by the donor's family to be the compass taken by Gregory Blaxland on his crossing of the Blue Mountains in 1813. The compass was passed to Gregory's daughter Jane (married Christopher Hays), then to her son, Arthur, to his son Norman (d. 1974, obituary in 'The Land' 2 May 1974), thence to his niece, Kathleen Cooper, and was presented to the Mitchell Library by her granddaughter, Judith.
