Samuel Thompson was born in London in 1821, the son of Joseph and Mary (nee Brown) Thompson; in 1832 the family left England for Australia. They came on the James Harris which sailed to New South Wales via the Cape of Good Hope and Hobart arriving in Sydney in April 1833. Joseph Thompson opened a drapery and furniture store in King Street, Sydney, which was also the family residence. In 1840 Samuel moved to the Cowpastures to run the general store purchased by his father. Soon after, he was joined by his brother Harry, and they later built a store and mill at Camden. Samuel married Emma Foss in 1852. - General note
