  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Botanist and marine flora expert William Henry Harvey (1811-1866) visited Australia in 1854 to 1856. During this period he collected 20,000 specimens.

    London publisher, John Van Voorst, was the publisher of Harvey's works and involved in the distribution of the sets of exsiccatae.

    NOTE: In 2003 the specimens from the collections described below were removed from the original album sets.
    The specimens are housed with the National Herbarium of New South Wales, Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney.
    The original bound albums and loose-papers, lists etc. are located in the Mitchell Library at PXD 724/vols. 1-4.

  • Conservation note

    Collaboration with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney, on how to preserve and protect these specimens began in 2003. To prevent further deterioration it was decided that the specimens would be carefully removed from the acid backing boards, but not from Harvey's original backing papers and stored to botanical standards in individual acid free enclosures.
