Bernard Smith was born in Sydney in 1916. He is a prominent art critic. He was a senior lecturer at the School of Fine Arts, University of Melbourne from 1957-1967. In 1967 he was appointed Professor of Contemporary Art and Director of the Power Institute of Fine Art, University of Sydney. He has published a number of influential books including Place, taste and tradition (1945), European vision and the South Pacific 1788-1850 (1960), Australian painting 1788-1960 (1962) and Imagining the Pacific in the wake of the Cook voyages (1992). - Scope and ContentCorrespondence alphabetically arranged.
