  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Robyn Ferrell is an Australian writer and philosopher, currently living in Sydney. She is the author of several books of philosophy and a book of creative non-fiction, The Real Desire, which was shortlisted for the NSW Premiers Award in 2005

'I like to write in the space between ideas and feelings. Sometimes this becomes philosophy, sometimes creative nonfiction. More often than not, these days, I'm using my own photos to accompany my writing

'Working on Sacred Exchanges has been a longtime project for me. I began looking at Aboriginal art in the mid 1990s, writing on native title and Central Desert painting as a kind of law. I later personalised this research by writing about my childhood growing up in a West Australian country town where Aboriginal people were relegated to reserves on the outskirts and the history of their treatment ignored - this piece is published as 'Pinjarra 1970: Shame and the Country Town' in my book The Real Desire

'In 2005, anthropologist colleague Jennifer Biddle and I won a large national grant to research feminist theory and Indigenous art, and Sacred Exchanges is the outcome of that project for me.'

Robyn Ferrell is a research fellow at the University of Sydney, in the Gender and Cultural Studies Department. She trained as a journalist on the Sydney Morning Herald before completing a PhD on philosophy and literature and taking up academic teaching positions at Macquarie University, University of Tasmania and University of Melbourne
