  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Walter Fitzgerald became a trustee of the Andrew Byrne Trust after his uncle relinquished his trusteeship in 1940. Andrew Byrne was born in County Wicklow, Ireland in 1775. His family was involved in the 1798 rebellion; Andrew Byrne was transported to Sydney and was given his freedom by Governor King on arrival in Sydney in 1800. His mother and four brothers were banished to the United States of America. Byrne was granted 30 acres at Botany and in 1831 150 acres on the coast at Garie and Era, now part of the Royal National Park. He had various business interests, including hotels, farming and real estate. In 1816 Byrne married Maria Davis Best, born 1799. They had 7 children: Hannah (1817-1904), William Andrew (1819-1824), Mary (1821-1900), Cavan (1823-1874), Elizabeth (1826-1907), Maria (1829-1899) and Andrew (1831-1895). Andrew Byrne died in 1863 and a Trust was formed by his children to administer part of his estate
