Angelo Loukakis, author, was born to Greek migrant parents in Sydney in 1951. His first collection of short stories, For the Patriarch, published by the University of Queensland Press in 1981, won the New South Wales Premier’s Literary Award in the same year. His play, Enemy Aliens, set in an Australian internment camp during World War, was commissioned by the Sydney Theatre Company in 1982. His second collection of stories, Vernacular Dreams (UQP) was published in 1986. Loukakis’ first novel, Messenger (Penguin, 1992), about growing up Greek in Australia, had the working titles ‘The Spirit Trade’ and ‘An Early Form of Life’. Rosemary Creswell became his literary agent in 1981.
