    Lord Wakehurst was born in 1895. He was educated at Eton and during World War I served in Gallipoli, Egypt and Palestine as a captain in the Royal Sussex Regiment and Intelligence Corps. He married Margaret Tennant in 1920. From 1919 to 1921 he worked in the British Foreign Office and later served two terms as a conservative member of the British Parliament from 1924 to 1929 and 1931 to 1936. In 1937 he was appointed Governor of New South Wales, a position he held until 1946.
