Ward Llewellyn Havard (1897-1964) was born in the Braidwood district of NSW, but moved soon after, upon the death of his father John, to a house named “Bernera” near Liverpool with his mother Ada. This house remained Havard’s home throughout his life. After studying at the University of Sydney, he taught Science at various high schools throughout NSW until his retirement in 1957. From 1942 to 1957 he was an officer in the Air Training Corps. Havard’s interest in history led him to join the Royal Australian Historical Society in 1926 and to explore, research and write articles, sometimes in collaboration with his wife Olive, about many of the historic sites of the Blue Mountains including the Great Western Road and Jenolan Caves, as well as individual explorers and historical figures. He was also an active member of several local historical societies and an enthusiastic contributor to newspaper and journal debates on historical matters. His Index to the Historical Records of Australia, comprising over 100,000 entries on 48,000 cards, was presented to the Public Library (now the State Library) of NSW in 1958.
