    James Fairfax was chairman of John Fairfax Ltd Sydney from 1977-1987 and director from 1957 to 1987, Life Governor Australian National Gallery Foundation since 1992, Life Governor Art Gallery of NSW since 1991 etc.
    Donald Friend was born at Moree, NSW in 1915. A much travelled artist who lived much of his life overseas in Europe, West Africa, New Guinea, Borneo and Sri Lanka. He served as a gunner in World War 2 and wrote and illustrated two books based on his experiences. Ill health forced him to return to Australia in 1980 and he died nine years later.
