    Sir William Dixson was born in Sydney in 1870. An engineer and businessman, he was also a notable collector of Australiana. He gave and bequeathed his entire collection of pictures, manuscripts, books, coins and stamps to The State Library of NSW between 1919 and his death in 1952. The Dixson Library, housing his great collections, was opened in 1959.
    Thomas Nicholas Baudin was born in France in 1754. In 1800 he was given command of an expedition to complete the French cartographic survey of the coast of Australia and conduct other scientific surveys there. He died at Mauritius in 1803 while returning to France.
