  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Edmund Milne was District Superintendent of Railways at Orange, NSW 1906-15 and later Deputy Chief Commissioner for NSW. He died in 1917. His son, Edmund Osborn Milne, also had a long career in the NSW Railways becoming Superintendant of Passenger Transport before his retirement in 1951. He served at Gallipoli and in the Middle East during World War I. He rose to the rank of major, was awarded the DSO and was three times mentioned in despatches. He again served overseas in World War II and was promoted colonel. He was a foundation member of Legacy and was active in the RSL for 44 years. He was also marshal of the Sydney Anzac Day march until his death in 1963.

    1. Photograph album, ca. 1865-ca. 1920. Chiefly portraits of Edmund Milne, Edmund Osborn Milne and members of their family. Includes a display of Australian Aboriginal weapons and a group of mounted soldiers beside the Sphinx in Egypt. Photographers include The Swiss Studios, Sydney; Howard Harris, Sydney; The Crown Studios, Sydney; London Studio, Jerusalem; W.H. Bursle, Orange; Kerry & Jones; W.A. Nicholas, Bundanoon.

    2. Illuminated Address. Presented to Edmund Milne on the occasion of [his] appointment to the high and responsible position of Assistant Commissioner for Railways and Tramways for the State of New South Wales and [his] consequent departure from Orange. Dated Orange, September 1915 and signed by the mayor and other prominent citizens. Includes 7 inset watercolours: 1. Train emerging from a tunnel. 2. Summer Hill Creek (title taken from photograph of identical scene published in "The Australasian Traveller, Jan. 7, 1907). 3. Rifle range. 4. Flock of sheep. 5. Orange Railway Station. 6. Orange Town Hall. 7. Street scene in Orange.
