First published in February 1975 by the Sydney Filmmakers Co-operative as an in-house newsletter, Filmnews was a monthly newspaper dealing with independent film production, distribution and exhibition in Australia and the federal and state government policies and practices which supported them. It was produced in Sydney but distributed Australia-wide, containing news, reviews, interviews, articles and some gossip on the local film community. With no cover price, Filmnews was financed by advertising revenue, some subscriptions and funding by the Australian Film Commission. In 1986 the Co-operative went into liquidation, bringing about management and staff changes at Filmnews, which eventually ceased publishing in 1995.
