The Australian Birthright Movement, also known as Birthright and the Lone Parent Family Support Service, was founded in 1964. Initially volunteers became members of the Birthright Movement and provided support to single-parent families through friendship and advice. Branches and divisions were established in New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory. During the 1980s there was a shift to the use of paid professional staff to provide counselling and advice on specific issues such as financial management, legal problems and parenting skills. Many branches ceased operating in the 1990s, citing that there was no longer a demand for their services. The Australian Birthright Movement and Lone Parent Family Support Service continue to operate in New South Wales and Western Australia.
