  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

William Lygon, 7th Earl Beauchamp (1872-1938), Governor of New South Wales, 1899-1901, was born in London. He had been mayor of Worcester and a member of the London School Board, when offered the governorship of New South Wales. He arrived in Sydney in May 1899 and left the governorship in April 1901, although he went on leave in October 1900, and did not return to the position due to the reduction of the Governor’s status and salary after Federation. “His commission as governor 'in and over the State of New South Wales and its Dependencies in the Commonwealth of Australia' was proclaimed on 1 January 1901 though he was not present.” Subsequent appointments in England included Lord Lieutenant of Worcestershire, Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, Chancellor of London University and a Knight of the Garter, and political positions in the Liberal Party and Free Trade Party. He died in New York in 1938.
