The Australasian Methodist Historica Society, Sydney reports in its journal, Vol.3, part 2, January 1935, that in 1854 Mudgee attained the status of a separate Circuit, consisting of Rylstone and Mudgee. The first recorded minutes of any oficial meeting held on the Circuit are those for the Quarterly Board, April 1855, when Hardwick was appointed Circuit Steward on the nomination of the chairman. He was succeeded in the position by John Bax, F.B. Gulley, and William Kellett in 1870. Hardwick was a lay preacher. His letters to relatives, held at ZMLMSS 448 show that in 1856 he lived at Rylstone, New South Wales - Name
