During 1974 Barbara Alysen was a member of the Management Committee of the Leichhardt Women's Community Health Centre, which when it opened in March of that year was the first such centre in Australia. Establishment of the centre occurred as a result of common dissatisfaction among women with existing medical treatment, expressed by participants at the Women's Commission of March 1973, and a perceived need for the development of a broader, more integrated concept of women's health. A funding submission presented to the then Minister for Health Dr Doug Everingham by members of the Control Abortion Referral Service was approved for the establishment of a women's community health centre at Leichhardt, defined as an area of need because of its large working class and migrant population.
