  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Richard Fitzgerald was born in 1772. In 1787 he was sentenced to seven years transportation. He arrived in Sydney in 1791 on board the convict transport William and Mary. As a reward for good conduct and because he had some knowledge of agriculture, successive governors gave him increasing responsibilities for public farms. In 1792 he was made superintendent of convicts at Toongabbie and by 1802 he was inspector and director of all government agricultural settlements. He was also rewarded with his own land grants which totalled 350 acres in the same year. In 1804 he was John Macarthur's factor and in 1808 was appointed constable of the Hawkesbury. Under Governor Lachlan Macquarie he thrived, becoming superintendent of stores in 1811 and responsible for the commissariat and public works four years later. After Macquarie's death he acted as agent for Mrs Macquarie and helped obtain an additional grant of 2000 acres for her and her son. He died in 1840.
