  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Joan Bradley was born at Neutral Bay, Sydney in 1916. She graduated from Sydney University in 1938 with a science degree and worked as an industrial chemist. She and her sister Eileen (1911-1976) developed a keen interest in the natural environment. They walked regularly in Ashton park, Mosman and from their observations devised a unique method of bush regeneration (known as the Bradley Method) which involved the careful weeding of individual plants rather than general clearing. They published Weeds and their control (1967) and Joan also published Bush regeneration (1971). At the time of her death in 1982 she was working on bushfire prevention and control.
