Cedric Blake Thomas (1911-1987) was a clergyman and a railways and tramways enthusiast, with a particular interest in steam trams. As a deacon in the Anglican Church, he spent many years in Sydney before moving to Tasmania, where he was ordained. He was Foundation President of the (New South Wales) Steam Tram and Railway Preservation Society, and was largely responsible for the ‘In and Around Sydney with the Steam Tram’ series of books published by the society. His research encompassed railway and tramway routes, timetables and rolling stock history.

The collection comprises subject files, photographs, research notes, maps and printed material relating to tramways and railways around Australia. The subject files typically contain: photographic prints from various sources, mounted on pages or loose, mostly uncaptioned; photographs copied or cut from books, magazines and newspapers; typescript articles; individual issues of Australasian Railway and Locomotive Historical Society Bulletins; hand-drawn and printed maps. Many files also contain loose pages from other files.
