  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Alfred George Stephens (1865-1933) was born in Toowoomba, Queensland. In 1894 he joined The Bulletin and two years later became editor of its literary section, The Red Page. In 1906 he left The Bulletin to become a freelance writer, literary agent, publisher and editor of his own journal, The Bookfellow. He greatly influenced the development of Australian literature, encouraging writers as well as editing and criticising their work.

    1977-1978; 1. The self-made critic: A.G. Stephens by Stuart Lee. A thesis submitted for the award of Master of Arts (Honours) at the University of Sydney. Includes photocopy of a letter received by Lee from Douglas Stewart, 4 July 1978.
    c.1981; A.G. Stephens: A select checklist compiled, with an introduction by Stuart Lee. A bibliography whose proposed publication by Walter Stone was abandoned on his death. (2 copies)
    1996; A.G. Stephens, "The Bookfellow": A biographical and critical study by Stuart Lee. An adaptation of Lee's thesis whose proposed publication by Hale & Iremonger was eventually abandoned.
