    Rev. John Thomas (1797-1881) and his wife Sarah (1792-1867) travelled from London to Tonga in 1825 under the auspices of the Methodist Church to carry out missionary work. Apart from a three year sojourn in England in the 1850s the two worked on various islands which made up the then Friendly Islands until 1860 when they returned to England.
