  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Incorporated on the 6 June 1951, Whale Industries Limited became the second Australian company to be issued a licence by the Australian Whaling Commission to undertake whaling in Australian coastal waters under the 'Whaling Industries Act' of 1949. The company established Tangalooma station at Moreton Island in Queensland and, trading as Whale Products Pty Ltd, commenced operations on 6 June 1952. Whale Products Pty Ltd traded successfully for the next decade achieving catches of over 600 humpback whales each season until 1962.
By 1962, a decade of whaling had caused a dramatic decline in the population of humpback whales off the coast of Australia and the Australian whale industry was brought to a sudden halt. In 1962, following a catch of 68 whales for the season, Whale Industries Limited ceased its whaling activities.
Lionel Kenneth Shave O.B.E was appointed General Manager of Whale Industries Limited in 1952. As General Manager, Shave served as both the company's senior Executive Officer and Whaling Manager. As Whaling Manager he was responsible for the policy and control of all whaling operations at Tangalooma station. In 1962 he joined the company's Board of Directors and served until 1963 when he retired from his position of General Manager and Director.
During the years of its operations from Tangalooma station, Whale Industries Limited diversified its holdings into pastoral and mining activities through a number of subsidiary companies, including; Farm Margarine Pty Ltd, Feed Lots Pty Ltd, Gurley Pty Ltd, Gurley Station Pty Ltd, Hi Protein Pty Ltd and Tangalooma Minerals Pty Ltd.
