  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Sir Lionel Lindsay (1874-1961), brother of Norman Lindsay, was born in Creswick, Victoria. He was an etcher, watercolour painter, wood-engraver, black-and-white artist, book-illustrator and art critic. Early in his career he worked as a freelance artist and journalist for weeklies in Melbourne and Sydney including the `Hawk' and the `Free Lance'. He was knighted in 1941 for his services to art.

    Jack Lindsay (1900-90), son of Norman Lindsay, was a poet, classical scholar, translator, biographer, novelist and critic. He was the author of over 150 books, including his autobiographical trilogy `Life rarely tells' (1958), `The roaring twenties' (1960) and `Franfrolico and after' (1962).
  • Scope and Content
    Aerogramme letter in ink sent from Wahroonga, Sydney to Essex in England. Lionel wrote to give Jack "a few items that may be of use to your autobiography". The letter is mainly about Norman Lindsay and includes details of early days at Creswick.
